Recently my mother and I bought some new clothes for her. When we got home we sorted out her closet and some clothes were put in a plastic bag ready to take to the charity shop. A faded blue OSKA T-shirt was no longer suited for the charity shop. I decided to use it to work out an idea that I had with a boat neck. I made a sketch of what I had in mind.

The idea

After making the sketch I carefully took out the seams of the T-shirt. I then saw that the inside looked much better than the outside. A pants I was working was also on the table and both were found to fit well together. Then I decided to make an effort of this T-shirt and decided to make a T-shirt that would fit and looked good so I would actually wear it.

The shape of the neckline

The finishing of the boat neck took considerably more time than cutting and sewing the T-shirt. The angle between the front and back is very important. Before I started cutting the definitive neckline, I first tried the T-shirt on to locate the position of the boat neck. Then I experimented with strips of fabric to figure out how I had to finish it and to get the right look.

Time and Costs

Total costs: Yarn € 1,00

Time used for this project: pattern drafting 1.5h, cutting 2h, sewing 6h

Totale kosten: Garen € 1,00

Arbeidsuren voor dit project: patroontekenen 1.5uur, knippen 2uur, naaien 6uur

The End Result

Conclusion: I’m very pleased with the total outcome of this T-shirt especially the result of the neckline. Using the inside of the old T-shirt makes it fits surprisingly well with black, blue and white jeans. I have another, discarded, T-shirt lying around which belonged to my eldest daughter. This time I will try to make the neckline at the front slightly higher.

  1. I have a couple boxes of t shirts and tops (and another bin of Jeans) for refashioning – especially old concert Ts with images that I hate to give-up. I like the way you crossed the boat-neck at the shoulder – great job!
