Februari roundup bucket list 2017 is about what I did during the second month of 2017 with my fifteen items on my 2017 bucket list. I’ve been sewing, started knitting and the daily cooking but also kept walking and we’ve visited two museums.

I’ve used some of the recipes that came from the magazine I showed last month. The leek clafoutis was made twice because everyone loved it. I also started baking something sweet each week. The ‘Boer zoekt Vrouw’ show started two weeks ago and just like last year I make something sweet. All recipes are chosen from the countries were the farmers are living. You can read about all my makes when the farmers have chosen the one they will hopefully share the rest of their life with.
Februari roundup bucket list 2017 – The knitting
One of the bucket list items is to knit at least one item using yarn from my stash. I started almost three weeks ago and I’m using this pattern. The shawl will be rectangle but without the triangulair beginning and end. This shawl has short rows sections. Knitting short rows is something I’ve done only once so this a real challenge for me.

Bucket list 2017 goal settings are my personal goal settings for 2017. In 2015 I made a bucket list too. I had 10 items on my bucket list and at the end of 2015 I had done 5 of them. One of them was starting my blog. Last December I decided to make a bucket list for 2017. During 2016 I had some personal ambitions that were still unfulfilled and I decided that I wanted to assign this open-ended goal settings.
Sewing Sinterklaas gifts 2016 are made of discarded clothes and small pieces of leftover fabric. In the previous post I already showed the jeanius laptop cover made of a discarded jeans for our youngest daughter. These other two makes are for my husband and our eldest daughter.
Happy Saturday Evening Family Meal – the tomato soup
Happy Saturday Evening Family Meal started with tomato soup. Both our daughters decided to were home this weekend so we had a kind of family meal together. Our daughters love a cup of soup and a favourite is homemade tomato soup with meatballs. I started baking two onions and after they were caramelised I added four grated cloves of garlic. As soon as the garlic was coloured I added one big tablespoon of flower and after two minutes three liter of vegetable stock was added. Then a a tin chopped tomatoes, a 500 ml a pack of tomato pulp and a large ton of tomato paste was added. The soup was almost ready after a good stir. Now I had to make some meatballs. I decided to spice the meatballs with sweet chilisaus. The tomato soup was served with two sweet pointed peppers cut into small slices.
Pumpkin Apple Cake is made of a recipe I found in a free magazine from a supermarket. In this post I was telling about the recipe and the make of it last weekend. The cake was big enough to enjoy it for two days. I also gave my lovely neighbour a generous piece of the cake. How did the cake taste. I’ll have to say in my opinion that when we were eating it last night I liked it more then on Sunday evening. It seamed liked the flavours have been blending and that was a good development. The only thing I’ve changed is that I used rhubarb compote instead of apricot jam. I also used a golden reinette apple instead of an Elstar or Jona Gold. I had some pumpkin left and I decided to use that for the Monday evening meal.
Roasted sweet potato dish is a mixture of vegetables and potato. A while ago I made this dish. We love sweet potato and I decided to use it this time in combination with cauliflower. You need one cauliflower, 500 grams sweet potato, 2 large carrots, 250 grams (frozen) green peas and 6 medium sizes potatoes. Clean all the vegetables and potatoes. Sometimes I prefer to leave the skin on the carrots and potatoes but this time I peeled them with the sweet potato. Cut the vegetables into equal sizes, besides the green peas. Transfer the vegetables (the green peas are added later) and potatoes on a baking sheet. Add fresh ground pepper and cumin. Drizzle olive oil over the mixture and mix. Put into a preheated oven (180-200℃) for about 30 to 35 minutes. Add the green peas after about 15 to 20 minutes to the dish.
One of my neighbours gave met two courgettes. He gave apples in the past. He gave me during the recent weeks more courgettes but the last two were very big and already a little bit yellow therefore I had to find some recipes to use them. The biggest courgette was used for a soup.
Sweet potato muffins is a recipe from Jamie’s Everyday Super Food book. I came across this recipe when my husband and I were drinking coffee in our favorite coffee bar. On one of the walls hangs a television screen showing cooking programs. Jamie Oliver was making muffins with cottage cheese. I love watching him. He is always so enthusiast when he is talking about food. When the muffins came out of the oven they looked most and fluffy and therefore I decided to see if I could find the recipe. The recipe was found on the internet and there was also the suggestion to use butternut instead of sweet potato. This was even better because I had a halve of butternut left when I made roasted vegetables two days earlier.

Last Monday I was walking from A to B when I came across a vegetable garden with some Brussels sprouts and kale still standing there. The temperature was below zero. Both vegetables can be exposed to cold temperatures and will have effect on the flavor by increasing the sugar content and effectively eliminating the bitter taste. My husband likes kale specially when it’s made in the ‘traditional Dutch way’: a stew with kale, mashed potatoes, smoked sausage and meat sauce. The smoked sausage preferably from a certain brand.
I’m not so keen on the smoked sausage so I made it on one occasion with a homemade sauce. My husband really likes the sauce and I made lot’s of times so over the years. Last week we where eating kale made after a recipe I found in a magazine and my husband asked me if I could make the kale with my homemade sauce again. This week there’s snow in the Netherlands and time to treat yourself with comfort food. So what could be a greater treat for my husband to make for him my version of a stew with kale and homemade sauce.
Homemade sauce is really easy to make. When the potatoes and kale are cooking you can start making the sauce. Start with melting some butter, add chopped leek or onions and cook them for 5 minutes. Add minced meat (beef, pig or both) and when brown and crumbly add a can of chopped tomatoes and chopped mushrooms. Add thyme, salt and pepper to your taste (some red pesto can be added too). Cook for fifteen minutes and hey presto your done. If you like you can add some chopped red bell pepper at last minute. Enjoy.
Afgelopen maandag terwijl ik van A naar B liep kwam ik langs een moestuin met nog enkele spruitjes en boerenkool. De temperatuur was onder nul. Beide groenten kunnen worden blootgesteld aan lage temperaturen en de smaak wordt erdoor verbetert omdat de vorst ervoor zorgt dat het suikergehalte toeneemt en waardoor de bittere smaak afneemt. Mijn man houdt van boerenkool speciaal wanneer het is gemaakt in de ‘traditionele Nederlandse manier’: stampot boerenkool, aardappelpuree, gerookte worst en vlees saus. De rookworst bij voorkeur van een bepaald merk.
Ik ben niet zo’n fan van de rookworst, dus ik maakte het ooit eens met een zelfgemaakte saus. Mijn man vond de saus lekker en sindsdien heb ik het vaak gemaakte. Vorige week aten boerenkool gemaakt van een recept dat ik vond ik in een tijdschrift. Mijn man vroeg of ik de boerenkool met mijn saus weer eens kon maken. Deze week is er sneeuw in Nederland en de tijd voor een bord met comfort food. Tijd voor mijn versie van stampot boerenkool en zelfgemaakte saus.
Zelfgemaakte saus is heel makkelijk te maken. Zodra de aardappelen en boerenkool koken begin je met het maken van de saus. Begin met wat boter te smelten, voeg gesneden prei of gehakt uien toe en bak 5 minuten. Voeg gehakt toe (rund, varken of beide) en als bruin en kruimelig zijn doe er dan een blikje gehakte tomaten en fijngehakte champignons. Voeg tijm, zout en peper naar smaak toe (wat rode pesto kan ook). Kook vijftien minuten en je bent klaar. Als je wilt kun je nu wat gehakte rode paprika toevoegen. Eet smakelijk.
Last year I made pumpkin soup, but when we wanted to eat the soup it unfortunately had become sour. A couple of days ago I was doing the weekly shopping and on the vegetable department of the supermarket was a beautiful orange pumpkin which I couldn’t resits.
Vorig jaar heb ik een pompoensoep gemaakt, die helaas zuur was geworden toen we deze wilde gaan eten. Een paar dagen geleden tijdens de wekelijkse boodschappen zag ik een prachtige orange pompoen liggen op de groente afdeling, die ik niet kon weerstaan.
More then a year ago I read ‘De Voedselzandloper’ by Kris Verburgh. The book is about the relation between good food and health and getting older in particular. One of his highly recommended basic food is oatmeal. Most of the food bought in shops is unhealthy in his opinion and cake and biscuits are the worst.
Meer dan een jaar gelden las ik het ‘De Voedselzandloper’ van Kris Verburgh. Het boek gaat over de relatie tussen voedsel en gezondheid en met name over ouder worden. Een van zijn meest aangeprezen voedsel is havermout. Het meeste van het voedsel dat je koopt in de winkels is in zijn ogen ongezond en vooral koekjes.
Years ago I found this recipe in the NRC. It was published in the newspaper 4 September 2003 by Kim Maclean. There is story before the actual recipe is showed. Her mother starts baking when she annoyed or nervous. It’s her way of dealing with that kind of situations. This character thing is something that runs in the family. Her mother bakes sweet things, her brother starts making sausage rolls when he wants to make his head clear and her sister bakes bread when she wants to relax. Kim is more like her mother: she also starts making sweet pastries. This recipe was made by Kim when she had on off-day.
Jaren geleden vond ik dit recept in de NRC. Het komt uit de krant van 4 september 2003 en is van Kim Maclean. Het recept begint met een verhaaltje over de bakneiging van de familie. Haar moeder begint met bakken van zoetigheden als ze ontevreden of nerveus. Het is een familie eigenschap. Haar broer gaat worstenbroodjes maken als hij even aan niets wil denken en haar zus bakt brood ter ontspanning. Kim neigt naar haar moeder en gaat voor zoet. Zo ontstaat dit recept toen ze een geen-zin dag had.
