RTW versus Handmade and Investment versus Stash

sewing magazine handmade stashIn this post I share with you my thoughts about RTW versus Handmade and my fabric stash. Two years ago I decided not to buy RTW clothes any more and make them instead. Until that moment my closet was a mixture of RTW and handmade.

Fabric Stash

I can’t remember when I started sewing. But I can remember there were times that I didn’t have a fabric stash. In my closet I have almost 35m of fabric. All kinds of fabric: wool, knitted fabrics, cotton and synthetic. Some are just plane, others have plaids, flowers or other designs.

In mijn kast is ongeveer 35m stof.

A new jacket or reducing stash

IMG_1514As seasons turns from winter into spring and summer and summer into autumn and winter, there is always a moment to take a look at your wardrobe and to be critical about what is hanging in your closet and especially the portability of a garment. I am not going to explain how to do this, there is plenty written about. Nor am I going to tell you how I do it. Except a wardrobe, I also have (of course) a stock of fabrics, sometimes with a sewing pattern of the garment to make. When I buy fabric and patterns I don’t have the intention to turn them into stash, but sometimes something happens and the fabric and pattern end on the shelf of my closet. The question now is, is this going to happen. Do I still find the pattern and fabric suitable and wearable or was it something I bought in impulse. One of these fabric-pattern packages has become this jacket. So in this case the original plan was carried out.

IMG_1539

Assembly Line Cap sleeve dress

Storm Francis raast over ons land.

Most men will wear shorts during warm and sunny days. This LMV Louis Shorts is my second shorts for my husband after making the WBM Men’s Cargo Shorts. The Louis shorts looks very similar to the Cargo shorts.

Claire Fairall Designs Little Doctor Bear

This Knipmode skirt pattern is part of pattern that comes also with a dress and jacket. Although the skirt pattern is no more than two pieces of fabric pieces this skirt has an eye-catching pleat. Two diagonal placed pleats that cross each other and a flat pleat near the side seam.

The Herren Shirt FÖHR by Farbenmix was made last year. The shoulder yokes are the eye-catchers of this T-shirt pattern. Due to fact there was no matching contrast fabric in my stash the question was how to add an interesting detail.

Oh Ronni Crossbody Bag

Crossbody bags are just like fanny bags a hot item. Great to use during the Summer on a walk or a bike ride. This Oh Ronni Crossbody Bag with his triangular shape has three pockets. BurdaStyle 04/2020 asymmetrical Shirt #121 is zo’n kledingstuk.

vier patchwork knuffel slaapzakken

Due to the Covid-19-virus most of us are sitting at home. Some pattern designers and fabric webshops are currently running discounts but one can also try to shop in the private stash. I decided to the last option and make sleeping bags for four soft toys made from a pattern that I’m current testing.

Fanny Pack Mach Dein Ding

I signed up for a swap. This challenge was a good opportunity to get rid of some stash because one had to use materials that were already in te house. My swap partner let me know that she liked all colours accept brown or beige. She makes clothes for herself and occasionele also for her husband and kids. She also likes to run, going to the fitness center and cycling.
A handy bag sounded great but than came question: what kind of bag? Fanny packs are back as a fashion statement. Nowadays not only worn in the classic way but also ass a crossbody at the front or back. Pattern wise the choice is yours. I dividend to make the Initiative Handarbeit Fanny Pack Mach Dein Ding.

Musthave Pruella Cardigan jOne

Everyone has basic clothes in his wardrobe. The daily basic pieces you always rely on and in your preferred colour scheme. Which garments that can be vary from person to person. My personal basic pieces are jeans, T-shirts, Chanel-style jackets and LBD.
My decision to make my own clothes made that I also had to sew cardigans. The most of my RTW bought cardigans are worn-out. I made the Blackwood cardigan a while ago and a Pruella Cardigan jOne for my mother. This cardigan was still on my list.
I came across some stashed fabrics and one of them was a jersey. One meter Eco friendly light pink with small grey stripes. This was perfect for a new basic T-shirt.

Youngest daughter wears Orageuse Paris Top

Last year I made this two piece combination: a pleated skirt and the Orageuse Paris Top. Our youngest daughter really liked the look of the Paris Top and asked me if I could make her one too.
She was very lucky. There was just enough fabric left to make her one but also some of the black lace that I had used for the triangle shaped yokes.
But then after our Holiday Autumn came, turned into Winter but the request wasn’t forgotten. Spring brought some sunny days so time to make my daughters Paris Top.

Homemade Multicolour basic T-shirt

I bought this multicolour print last year in Haarlem during the Stoffenbeurs Spring event. I wanted to use it for a short sleeved Summer T-shirt but it turned into stash when Autumn arrived.
My wardrobe was cleared out at the beginning of Spring and some of my most worn T-shirts had to go.
Going through my stash looking for fabrics to make some new ones this multicolour print popped up too. It took some carefully playing around with my pattern pieces but it was doable to make a long sleeved T-shirt.

Two basic blue T-shirts

I cleared out my wardrobe and some of my well worn T-shirts had seen better days. My fabric stash is slowly decreasing but lucky me I found a small amount of light blue jersey bought at Sikkes for the first make.
My second fabric was found in the discarded clothes stash. A never worn dark blue Tank dress that was given to me. Time to start cutting my two basic blue T-shirts.

A while ago I across a remnant that already has turned into the Blackwood cardigan. My version of the Blackwood cardigan is made of bouclé fabric that has all kinds of pale colours like pink, light blue, green and yellow.
I wanted to make a matching T-shirt because I’ve a lot of grey and black T-shirts but no pink or light blue. My fabric stash isn’t that huge but between my leftovers I found a piece of suitable pink jersey that really matched beautiful with the bouclé fabric.
I decided to make JLH Gable Top pink version.

Knitted Connecting Stripes Tunnel Scarf

This Knitted Connecting Stripes Tunnel Scarf is a leftover knitting project. So over the years I’ve knitted a few scarfs and warps. The Mondsee scarf was the last one but also the Camus wrap, Varjo, Sonnensegel, Me and You and Keffiyeh wrap came from my knitting needles.
Just like I want to reduce my fabric stash I’ve the same mission for my knitting yarn. I’ve already used some lefrovers to knit tiny hats for the Innocent elderly campaign. Last winter I forgot to take a scarf while leaving public transport with me and started knitting a new one.
This project was set aside when it became Spring. Weather is slightly moving towards Autumn so perfect to finish this UFO leftover project.

Gillian started in 2012 the Sewing Top Five serie. The Sewing Top Five has 5 categories: hits, misses, highlights, reflections and goals. She writes individual blogposts with each categorie as subject.
I liked the idea but decided to make a mixture of all these categories in just one block of five. Why? Because I didn’t had many misses (no selfmade project was destroyed in the wash, never worn or when it failed it was unpicked and got another look). So here we go in no particular order.

WardrobebyMe Summer Tulip Top floral print version

Clothes with floral prints can be seen each year on the catwalk. A floral print can give a plane looking skirt, jeans or plane looking blouse a complete different look. This floral print came from my stash. I bought this fabric more then four years ago soon when I started making my own clothes. This remand was about one meter, a soft and light cotton with a little shine. This fabric came several times on the table but I never found a suitable pattern for it. A few weeks ago Wardrobe by Me offered several of their patterns with 20% discount. I had spotted the Summer Tulip Top and decided to make it from floral print fabric.

Green Greener almost Greenest Garment Combination

I’ve been thinking for a while what to make from this fabric. I had spotted the Closet Case Charlie caftan a while ago and wanted to use it for this pattern. Closet Case has some great designs. The Kalle shirt is a perfect example of a Closet Case pattern that I’ve used already twice in a hack. I decided to make a toile first. The fit wasn’t what I was looking for and I didn’t had any idea what I had to change for a better look. In the meantime I made this two-piece refashion combination and wrote a blogpost about plastic free sewing. One thing let to another and this two piece Green Greener almost Greenest Garment Combination is the result.

Two discarded clothes turned into new two piece summer set

Our youngest daughter told me several times I should wear something else then a jeans during hot summer days. My last summer skirt has left my wardrobe a while ago. When it’s hot I usually wear my refitted GBSB Drapey Knit dress but that’s only for one day. The next day I want some fresh clothes.
So I was thinking for a while what to make for those tropical sunny days? What to wear instead of jeans that is comfortable when it’s hot. While I was re-organizing my discarded clothes stash I found this dress. I made this dress for our youngest daughter about 10 years ago. I also found a Top that belonged to our eldest daughter. The re-fashionist in me woke-up: Two discarded clothes turned into new two piece summer set.

Vogue 9080 1980s dropped shoulder blouse

This May month is reserved for unselfish sewings. Making something for my mother because Sunday will be Mother’s day. This fabric was bought In February at Stoffenspektakel. I also found a design that I wanted to make for her. Although I had bought enough fabric after pre-washing there wasn’t enough. Next step was trying to find a suitable sewing pattern. I found in my pattern stash a pattern that I bought in the 80s but never used it. The envelope was damaged due to several relocations so over the years. Perfect for my UWYH project and I started making Vogue 9080 1980s dropped shoulder blouse for my mother.

Floral printed Slim Fit 5-pocket Jeans

Floral printed Slim Fit 5-pocket Jeans

I made a while ago a Flower Power outfit. The fabric I used for my Floral printed Slim Fit 5-pocket Jeans is from the same KNIPster sewing award 2016 period. I wanted to use it for the Maxima theme. But I made something complete different after listening to advise that Maxima never wears trousers when she’s going on a public visit. – a never used coat pattern
– use a zipper

Time was not on my sight so perhaps making a Day&Night Dress Challenge 2018 fabric choice for my toffe date dress would be an idea to help me out. The fabric for my coffee date dress came from stash. monthly sewing plans 2018

I wrote in my Round-up Bucket list 2017 that I was looking for another challenging bucket list 2018. On Instagram some sewists shared their #2018makenine sewing plans. I decided not to take part in this challenge because I find it hard to make at the beginning of a year sewing plans with patterns to use them throughout a year. My first idea was to let my monthly intention start with the first letter of that month.

Fox Travel Neck Pillow

I decided to make a car neck pillow in week 3 of this Oktober Homemade Christmas ideas. Most people will visit family and friends during these holidays and travel by car, airplane or train. Some like and can sleep during these hours and love to have a comfortable travel neck cushion but the neck pillow is also comfortable while reading. I had some off white teddy in my stash and wondering how to use that for a neck pillow. In my childhood time lots of elderly women were wearing small fur neck warmers. They were made of mink, weasel or a small fox. This gave me an idea to make an animal neck pillow. A fox caught my eye and the dark red fleece came form the leftover fabric stash. Now it was time to think about a pattern to make a Fox Travel Neck Pillow.

Autumn 2017 sewing plans

You can see in another todays bog post my version of the Mondsee scarf. September 1th is the beginning of the meteorological Autumn. There’s a gap of three weeks between the meteorological Autumn and the astronomical Autumn. At the beginning of this week we still had Summer weather. Lots of sunshine and high temperatures. But the weather changed dramatically on Wednesday. It was raining almost the whole day and temperatures dropped. The next day was also grey and cold. It felt like we had a taste of Autumn already. I decided to start thinking about clothes to make for the upcoming astronomical Autumn while wearing my Mondsee scraf. I now share some of my Autumn 2017 sewing plans.

Monie Ebner is the designer of the Mondsee scarf. She has some lovely designs and this scarf is one of them. The pattern is available on Ravelry. The instructions are well written and there’s a diagram that shows the layout of the contrast colour sections. This pattern also comes with a link to Purlbee how to knit the short rows. I decided to knit a complete rectangular version and skip the fishtail sections at both ends.

Jeans Blue/Black vertical stripes Mens T-shirt

The Dutch phrase for this Jeans Blue/Black vertical stripes Mens T-shirt would be ‘mijn man heeft een streepje voor’: This time my husband was in my good books. The funny part in the Dutch phrase is ‘streepje’ – ‘stripe’. Sometimes it isn’t possible to write a blog post in two languages and making the ‘playing with words’ happen. I came across this fabric some weeks ago while I was buying haberdashery. I haven’t any suitable fabrics for my husband in my fabric stash so every time I see something suitable for him I buy it. Stripes never loose style and a T-shirt made of this fabric would look casual and smart on his jeans.

Elle Puls Bethioua Back Yoke Raglan Top

Elle Puls Bethioua Back Yoke Raglan Top sounds like a mouthful but there’s no better way to describe this ingenious designed Top. This pattern was in my stash for a while now. I also had some leftover black/white stripped fabric from this make. Put this two together and you have my version of the Elle Puls Bethioua Back Yoke Raglan Top. Sounds easy. It only takes some sewing time. So here we go and read more about my experience with this pattern.

Elle Puls Bethioua Back Yoke Raglan Top

The design of the Elle Puls Bethioua Back Yoke Raglan Top

This top is designed for knitted fabrics like French Terry, Jersey and Sweater Knit. It has a long-sleeved raglan at the front and a curved back yoke with a center back seam. All this elements give you all kinds of possibilities to play with stripes, mixing different fabrics or colours. The hem is slightly lower at the back and the top has a scoop neck. Elke Puls made some different sleeve lengths. The tutorial can be found here. There’s also a dress version and a tutorial to make a bell sleeved version. The pattern comes in size 34 – 54. You can find two measurements in the sewing instructions: one to choice the size and one for the actual finished size.

Homemade Black White striped asymmetric cut Top

Homemade Black White striped asymmetric cut Top is designed for my mother. She wanted another Top after I made this one for her. She told me she wanted a Black White stripe fabric or Blue White stripe. I asked her if she liked an asymmetrical look and made a sketch to show her what I had in mind. My mother loved the idee so I took the sketch with back home.

Elle Puls Tunika Elle meets Closet Case Kalle Shirt

Elle Puls Tunika Elle meets Closet Case Kalle Shirt is a so called Hack. You often find pattern hacking term on sewing blogs. It’s a bit of mixing and matching with a pattern or patterns. The cropped and boxy look of the Kalle shirt are todays style features. I decided to mix the Tunika Elle with the Kalle shirt. The cropped version of the Kalle shirt has just like the Tunika Elle a wide faced hem. Both patterns have a hidden button placket, an optional breast pocket and band collar. After a night sleep I had some idea of how I would be mixing both patterns. I also had a test model of a welt pocket that I made more then two years ago on a shelf. This pocket was the perfect detail for my hack.

Christine Haynes Sassy Librarian Blouse

Christine Haynes Sassy Librarian Blouse pattern was in my pattern stash for about three years. I purchased this pattern shortly after my decision to make all my clothes. Christine Haynes Sassy Librarian Blouse has two versions. On the internet  I had seen some beautiful versions of this pattern and decided that I wanted a copy too. The Sassy Librarian Blouse is only available at Craftsy and comes with sewing class as well. The price of this package is $29.99 which is € 27,80.

Christine Haynes Sassy Librarian Blouse – my version

I used leftover fabric coming from this make. The leftover piece was about 90 centimeters long and I made a toile first. My toile version was a nightmare. The fit at the front was terrible, the neckline to wide at the back and the sleeves didn’t fit. I redrafted the front and the neckline, made darts instead of pleats and puffed sleeves with a cuff. I used some leftover white cotton to make the collar and bought these beautiful (bit expensieve) blue pearl shaped buttons.

Four Homemade white suits

Four Homemade white suits is a request sewing project. Our youngest daughter used to be member of The Royal Student Rowing Club “Njord” in Leiden when she was a student. After rowing a couple of years at the annual NSRF last rowing races of the season she now is a member of the organisation committee. The championships are held at the Bosbaan in Amstelveen. Members of the organisation committee wear white suits. Six weeks before the championships our youngest daughter asked me if I could make her a white suit and for two of her fellow members. Although they originally wanted a suit jacket they decided to have a jacket like the one I had made a while ago. The jackets have a dark blue lining in the jacket and piping. I also made a mens jacket for one of the male fellow members.

Leisure Time Two Coloured Mens T-shirt

I used the self drafted pattern that is the same as for all the white T-shirts I’ve been making for my husband to make this Leisure Time Two Coloured Mens T-shirt. The fabric was found at Stoffenbeurs in Haarlem that was held on the last Sunday of March. I was looking for white jersey fabric to make some more new white T-shirts. That fabric wasn’t found but I saw some blue jersey fabric with a black stripe that would be perfect to make a Leisure time T-shirt.

First step

I always pre-wash fabrics so the finished garment will not shrink anymore. Some fabrics can also be treated with starch or other chemicals to give them for example a shine. Pre-washing will also remove this starch and chemicals. This fabric lost 4% of its length and 2% of its width after pre-washing. I ironed the fabric and started cutting.

Gudrun Grenz Top remake

Gudrun Grenz Top remake is a sewing project I’ve done for my mother. She bought this Gudrun Grenz Top years ago. The print on the jersey fabric and shape caught her eye and she loved wearing it. My mother and I love asymmetrical designed clothes and we also have a preference for black and white. The jersey fabric unfortunately faded away due to frequently wear and the many washings. I promised her a while ago to make a Top and found the Gudrun Grenz Top on the recycle pile of clothes. One and one makes one. I decided to use the faded Gudrun Grenz Top to make the promised Top.

Drafting a suitable pattern

I unpicked the Gudrun Grenz Top and started drafting a pattern using the unpicked pieces as a guideline. My mother’s figure has changed a bit so I also made some alterations to get a better fit. The original Top also had a triangle shaped piece at one side. This was hanging down but also could be shortened by buttoned it on the inside of the top on the underarm seam. I reshaped this triangle shaped piece into a more asymmetrical piece so it flows more with the other halve of the hem. I made this blue Top last year during the KNIPster sewing competition. My mother loved this blue fabric and I had just enough left in my stash to use for the Gudrun Grenz Top remake.

Striped Maxi Tank Dress becomes Breton Top

Striped Maxi Tank Dress becomes Breton Top is another refashion project. Our eldest daughter bought this Striped Maxi Tank Dress two years ago and never wore it. The price ticket was still on the dress. She asked me if I wanted the dress and I said of course yes although I had not idea what I was going to do with it.

Reuse Recycling Refashions

I love doing refashions. Refashion and upcycling are a great way to repurpose clothes that can be given a new second life. My family and friends are always bringing their discarded clothes to me first before sending them to the charity shop. The Striped Maxi Tank Top Dress was hanging on a clothes hanger for a while waiting for inspiration. I watched a couple of weeks ago Krabbé zoekt Picasso (Krabbé in search of Picasso) on the television. Pablo Picasso is wearing a Breton top in one of the episodes. A Breton top is a classic and timeless sweater. I also see a lot of Breton Tops and striped tops in the shop windows this year so why not use the Striped Maxi Tank Dress to make one.

sewing my own clothes

Sewing my own clothes was a decision I made three years ago. I wasn’t happy anymore when I was buying RTW clothes. The fit, the poor make and the quality of the fabrics: it was time for a change. A search on the internet brought me to sewing bloggers from all over the world. The first thing I made is probably this version of the Sorbetto top. This pattern has just been updated and comes with a few more options then the first version.

Makers for Fashion Revolution

Last week In the Folds started Fashion Revolution week. This blogger started an Instagram photo challenge with each day another subject. I decided to take part and use the subjects to show some of my reasons why I sew my own clothes. As seamstress I consider myself as a maker of clothes. I sew my own clothes because I want reliable clothes. Clothes that have a proper fit, buttons that don’t fell off, seams that don’t loosen or zippers that tear while I’m at work.

Homemade Easter Decorations

Homemade Easter Decorations is a sewing project using leftover fabrics and discarded clothes. I made the last years some Christmas decorations and decided to do the same for Easter. I found a lot of inspirations on Pinterest and decided to make some flowers, a bunny and a fabric egg.

Homemade Easter Decorations – the fabric tulips

Our youngest gave me a couple years back two long glass vases. They are standing a few years on our windowsill. I had already decided that I wanted to make some fabric flowers for them using leftover fabrics. I found some blue fabrics in my leftover stash and used this TNT pattern to make them. All fabrics are a kind of denim so this was a little bit harder to work with then the usual fabric. Two evenings later six tulips were standing in both vases.

Februari roundup bucket list 2017

Februari roundup bucket list 2017 is about what I did during the second month of 2017 with my fifteen items on my 2017 bucket list. I’ve been sewing, started knitting and the daily cooking but also kept walking and we’ve visited two museums.

Februari roundup bucket list 2017 – cooking

I’ve used some of the recipes that came from the magazine I showed last month. The leek clafoutis was made twice because everyone loved it. I also started baking something sweet each week. The ‘Boer zoekt Vrouw’ show started two weeks ago and just like last year I make something sweet. All recipes are chosen from the countries were the farmers are living. You can read about all my makes when the farmers have chosen the one they will hopefully share the rest of their life with.

Februari roundup bucket list 2017 – The knitting

One of the bucket list items is to knit at least one item using yarn from my stash. I started almost three weeks ago and I’m using this pattern. The shawl will be rectangle but without the triangulair beginning and end. This shawl has short rows sections. Knitting short rows is something I’ve done only once so this a real challenge for me.

Chambray Japanese cross back apron

Chambray Japanese cross back apron is made for a dear friend of mine. She came to me more then a year ago and told me about an apron she had seen in a shop. We did some search on the internet and when I showed her the Japanese cross back apron she told me that was what she was looking for. I also found a free pattern to make one and gave her the link.

During 2016 I had some personal ambitions that were still unfulfilled and I decided that I wanted to assign this open-ended goal settings.

Sewing Massimo Dutti Overhemd

Sewing Massimo Dutti Overhemd – the pattern

Sewing Massimo Dutti Overhemd is made of a pattern that can be found in the first Dutch edition of the Spanish Patrones. It’s called Fashion Style and I showed it a while ago in this blogpost. The overhemd is described as a Japanese Styled dress shirt with dropped shoulder line, batwing short sleeves, added sleeves to make long sleeves and a Mao collar. I’ve made one alteration. The pattern has a straight front placket which seemed to be a bit odd in my opinion because the finished version has a kind of V-shaped neckline. I drafted a front placket that follows that shape. It was added to the front pattern while cutting and also cut twice to make the front placket for the buttonholes on the right side and for the buttons on the left side. My version of the Massimo Dutti Overhemd is made in size 38.

Crewneck Sweater Burda 11_2015 112 – the crewneck sweater

Crewneck Sweater Burda 11_2015 112 is made of black fabric with velvet polkadots from my stash. I bought this fabric last year while I was in The Hague together with our eldest daughter. It will be Christmas within four weeks and I wanted to make something to wear on Boxing day. The dress for the first Christmas day is already hanging in my closet. Boxing day asks for a more comfortable wear and I decided that I wanted to make a top that I could wear with the trousers I had made at the beginning of this year. I also made a skirt of the same fabric so I can choose that day if I want to wear trousers or a skirt.

Ice Blue Coloured Named Talvikki Sweater

Ice Blue Coloured Named Talvikki Sweater – the pattern

Ice Blue Coloured Named Talvikki Sweater is made from the newest Named pattern collection called Evolution Theory. The Talvikki seater has a dropped shoulder line and a turtleneck. Both are the Autumn and Winter season fashion items for 2016/2017. The darts in the neckline are an interesting feature in this design and therefore this pattern looks different then regular sweater patterns. I ordered the PDF version and after receiving the email the pattern was available for download. The pattern is in a layered PDF file which means that all of the sizes are stacked on top of each other on the different layers. I printed 32/34 which is the smallest size. I bought this fabric special for this pattern because I hadn’t any suitable in my stash. This tricot circle fabric has 3% elastan which is enough stretch for the turtleneck. I’ve chosen this lovely ice blue color.

The clothes always look very stylish and I was looking in big cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague if I could buy the magazine. I’ve never was lucky and now it’s translated in Dutch and available in magazine shops and supermarkets. Even in my little village there’s a magazine shop selling this magazine. Silky Mamma Spider is made of the new pattern from The Sweetbriar Sisters, the Spooky Spider. Jessica is a talented designer of wonderful toy patterns that makes great softies for kids. I had the pleasure of testing their newest pattern after testing Tully the Turtle. A spider this time and therefore a perfect sewing make for Halloween. The pattern comes in full-size and seam allowance are included. You’ve the wonderful option to make a Mamma Spider or a Baby Spider or perhaps make both. On every piece is written how many times to cut and out which fabric. Matching notches are drafted on the pattern pieces too. The instructions are well written and with clear pictures for the more visual sewer to help you from step one until you’ve finished the spider.

Silky Mamma Spider

Silky Mamma Spider – my version

Silky Mamma Spider is made of silk fabric. I decided to give her contrasting legs. I made my legs of black heavy lining fabric. The white of the eyes is made of white cotton fabric and sewn on the body with a small narrow zigzag stitch. I ironed some fusible interfacing on the back of the cotton to give it some firmness. I did the same also on the back of the front body but not only on the position of white eye but also on the place of the month. Instead of safety eyes I used a button with a concave shape and a little white pearl bead. Both are sewn on carefully and well attached so they won’t come loose when the spider is given to a child. The month is done with a decorative stitch from my sewing machine using a slight thicker yarn.

May wearings fourth week – day to day

May wearings fourth week will be opened telling you what I was wearing for the lunch in a restaurant. Just like last week temperatures were going up and down.  A couple of days with sunshine and then a couple of days with grey, cold and rain. Sunday wasn’t the best day for the lunch. When we arrived it was still dry. The walk in the city and a coffee on the terras were done in dry, a little bit sunny weather. After looking at some shops it was time to find a nice restaurant for a lunch and just when we were sitting down on the terras it started to rain. After the lunch we ran back to the car, but when we passed a forrest we decided to use the umbrellas for a small walk. Under the trees and with the umbrellas it wasn’t as bad as in the city. On Thursday the weather changed and Friday and Saturday was sunny with nice temperatures.

Soft Slouchy Summer Sweater

Soft Slouchy Summer Sweater – the inspiration

Soft Slouchy Summer Sweater is inspired on this McCall 6400 top and the fact the weather is letting us down in the Netherlands: it’s more autumn then spring. Asymmetrical tops and odd shaped patterns like one piece patterns are things I’m also looking after and the lack off sunshine made me wanting to make something warm and cozy. Mixing these two was my challenge.

New year and good intentions

Just like many others I always start each new year with some good intentions. Last year I wrote my intentions down on a bucket list. It had ten items and four of them are done. Starting my website/blog was one of them, another one was sewing a Chanel jacket.

Happy Feet or how to keep toes warm

Wardrobe Capsule

IMG_0947xThe November challenge of the Monthly Stitch is sew two items for a Wardrobe Capsule. A wardrobe capsule is all about having essential pieces. A basic collection of essential pieces of clothing that wouldn’t go out of fashion and could be updated with seasonal pieces to make it fit for fashion at that moment.

Just another Jeans

IMG_0928 voorThese two toned black and grey jeans are the second garment I’ve finished for the November challenge of the Monthly Stitch. Both clothes are made from my stash. The color of the mannish coat matches beautiful with the jeans and also with a sweater and infinity scarf that I made earlier. The fabric of the jeans is stretch denim: 97% denim with 3% spandex. This type of fabric just give a little bit of stretch for more wearable comfort, but not to much to make the jeans baggy within two hours while wearing.

Sinterklaas gifts part 1

IMG_2970 1The next two weeks I will be sewing all kinds of small gifts for Sinterklaas. First I made the Japanese knot bag. It’s also my November contribution to the SAL of a stash busting group. In another post I’ve shared my stylish accessories contribution at this group with you.

UFO knitting projects

IMG_0818Since I joint a stash busting group there is already about 8m gone and turned into clothes. Although I thought I had a clear vision of my UFO’s and that I had finished them all the reality is that when more stash fabric were turned into clothes one bag turnes up with unfinished knitting projects.

Striped pencil skirt

voor 5 xA couple of days ago I was searching for some fabric in my leftovers for a project when our youngest daughter came into the room. She saw a piece of leftover fabric from this jacket that I made a while ago for our eldest daughter. It was my first entry for the Monthly Stitch.

A galaxy T-shirt

voor armen xA couple of months ago I visited to the annual fabric market in Haarlem and saw this fabric. It has a 4-way stretch and I bought it for another twisted top from the Pattern Magic I book. It’s an amazing construction: only one piece and a few seams.

Stylish accessories

foto 2 xToday my fourth and final part of the ‘Sew with Me September challenge’. After the tartan skirt, blouse and pair of pants it was time for the finishing touch. The brief is: sew up any accessory to round out and compliment the coordinates. It could be whatever and from where ever we desire.

Ankle boots and the change of season

bootsAutumn has arrived. The past couple of days we had typical Dutch weather: rain, wind and cold. It’s time to clear out my closet. Spring and Summer clothes I haven’t been wearing are going into bags. Other clothes are washed for the last time and after washing checked on loose buttons, holes, tears and I’ve to make a decision if I’m going to wear it next year. After that they are going into sealed bags. My shoes will have the same routine. Before going into boxes I’m checking if the need to be repaired and polish them. Some shoes will stay in the closet. That are the ones to wear with a dress or skirt when going to appointments or dinner parties.

Blouse with contrast

zij blouse x1After making the tartan skirt with contrast I decided that I wanted to make a blouse with some contrast fabric too. In my stash I found this lovely light camel 2-way stretch jersey fabric that would be perfect to make a blouse out off it. Looking further in the stash I found some leftover black also 2-way stretch jersey fabric. Those would go perfect with my skirt and the pair of jeans that I already have in mind.

meet my new assistant

IMG_2339When I got home yesterday one of my neighbors was clearing out. Between the stuff she was departing from was this dress form. She knows I like to sew and asked me if it was something for me. I was in doubt and thinking if there was any space in my tiny space for this girl. Then I decided to take her home with me and see if there was a function for her. All my sewing years I’ve done without a dress form, but more then a year ago I start looking for a dress form.

De ijsmakers written by Ernest van der Kwast was published in January of this year. I bought this book during the annual Boekenweek and placed it on my pile because I was already reading another book. It may be not a surprise but just like my fabric I also have a book stash. In the course of time I bought to much books and haven’t had and still not have always the time to read all the books. A while I decided to limit the purchase of books: reading to 2 books of my stash versus one new purchased book.

Colored Blocks Blouse or a Vintage/Retro Look Blouse

IMG_0515xvheelThis blouse is my second garment for the combination I wanted to make for the July challenge of The Monthly Stitch. My first plan was to make a tartan jacket with a pair of trousers. In my stash I have 1.5m of tartan fabric and for the matching pair of trousers I found a really lovely red stretchy fabric which I turned into homemade red jeans. The jeans was made first, because I already had a basic pattern for it. Then I started drafting the jacket and the challenge to match the tartans in the different pattern parts. A week later there wasn’t any progress, the matching failed over and over again and I decided to let it rest and make something else.

Slouchy Summer Sweater

IMG_0479bankjexFor the cold moments in the summer when the sun gets down or is behind the clouds I wanted an easy to wear sweater which I can easy pull over my head. This fabric I found at one of the annual markets form Stoffen Spektakel in april this year.

sewing red pants or part 1 of a combination

IMG_0444XvThese red jeans are the first finished garment of what is be coming a combination. It’s my contribution for the July challenge of The Monthly Stitch. When this challenge was announced I had an idea about how to execute this challenge. When I was buying haberdashery for another project where I was working on I came across this red fabric and thought this would be the perfect match with one of plaids in my stash. The fabric is a cotton-blend with 2% spandex. And my closet was asking for a color splash.

Shadow Inspiration or Follow the Shadow

IMG_1854A couple of weeks ago when I was clearing out and rearranging fabric I came across my knitting projects and yarn. Today I’ve finished one of these knitting UFO’s.

just a Tee or lefT-shirt

IMG_0398X1Last weekend was le Grand Départ of le Tour de France in the Netherlands. It was a very hot weekend and we decided to watch it on television instead of going to Utrecht. While watching television I was working on my new T-shirt. Last week I had to say goodbye to a couple of my beloved and well-worn, but worn-down T-shirt. When I was doing some tidying up of my fabric, rearranging it and making planes for new projects I came across a piece of leftover fabric used for this T-shirtWorking with leftover fabric can be really satisfying.

Leftover fabric or is there way to avoid it

Working with a piece of leftover fabric is always a challenge. It’s really satisfying to find a project that fits the amount of leftover fabric and ends in a wearable garment or useful object. The question is how do leftover fabric arise and is there a way to avoid them. Although I always try to buy just enough fabric for a project there are always leftovers. Leftovers can be small, but sometimes very large. To avoid that large pieces of leftover fabrics ends in stash I try to find a use for the fabric in a short time. In my opinion there are five main reasons for large pieces of leftover fabric..

  1. Buying to much fabric. The fabric yardage needing given by a pattern is sometimes to much. How can one avoid this: Before buying fabric for a project I make a pattern lay-out at home.
  2. You except a deal when the seller offers you the last piece for a special price.
  3. You bought fabric for a project, but it never comes to sewing. It becomes stash and then it’s used for a project that needs less fabric.
  4. The garment is unique and has odd shaped pattern pieces that can only lay very on-economically on the fabric.
  5. Fabrics with a nap and/or repeating design-patterns like tartans and ginghams.

Drapey Knit Dress with Obi Belt or A wearable Japanese Combo

IMG_0383xv

A dress is something I hardly sew, but sometimes a dress comes along that stays in your mind. For some time I had the Drapey Knit Dress on my sewing wish-list and with fabric from my stash I decided to give it a go. The dress comes from the book Fashion with Fabric published after the third serie of The Great British Sewing Bee by Claire-Louise Hardie. The book was a gift from a friend of mine. After seeing some other versions made from this pattern on the internet I decided to make the dress with sleeves and leave the pockets out. My fabric isn’t the suggested fabric, but a more thinner version. The pattern in my fabric looks a bit like the origami V-Fold Span and the pattern also follows the way the pleat is folded in the front of the dress. This fabric makes the finished dress more suitable for a cool summer day.

I did a remake and made myself a new refitted GBSB Drapey Knit Dress

A fun shaped T-shirt or Draped and Shaped

IMG_0030 xEasy patterns with a great fit are combinations I really like. One of those examples for such pattern is for me the T-shirt no. 4 from the book Drape Drape 2 by Hisako Sato. I’ve made the one pattern drape Top once before. From my stash came this lovely shinny blue jersey fabric which I bought last year when I planned to make a second version of this T-shirt. As I told in that post I wanted to try to make a SBA the next time for a more fitted shape. The SBA is done on the center front and center back. The taken out part was a kind of wedge. Like the first T-shirt this one has also a raised neckline. It’s about 5cm higher on the front then in the original pattern.

Fish from the sea or bringing fish to the sea

IMG_1707The ancestors of my husband used to live in Vlaardingen and the men in his family were herring fishermen just like the most of the other men living there. Saturday the 13th of June was Vlaggetjesdag. It ‘s an annual tradition. It involves a fishing boats race, which boat brings the first herring into the harbor, and the auction of the first barrel of herring (the profit will go to an organization, like cancer, children in need or sport for disabled).

Tulips and herring or famous dutch products

IMG_1619At this moment our eldest daughter is working for accountants firm. Yesterday her firm was having a business company promotion. It was the annual network and herring party. When she told us about it she said that the men were wearing oranges ties but that there wasn’t an orange item for the ladies. I offered her to make a fabric orange tulip for her and turn it into corsage/brooch. She loved the idea and told her two other female colleagues, who also would be present at the promotion. They asked her if I could make two more.
