Sinterklaas gifts part 2

Sinterklaas for adults is about giving presents to each other usually combined with coordinating poems and handcrafted surprises.

Sinterklaas voor volwassenen wordt meestal gevierd met cadeautjes, gedichtjes en soms ook surprises.

How we celebrate Sinterklaas

In our family the presents and coordinating poems are usually present, but the handcrafted surprises not. In the past I’ve made a few handcrafted surprises when I attended primary – and high school, but after that period I only made them together with our two daughters when they attended primary – and high school. A few weeks before Sinterklaas we drew tickets in the classroom. At such ticket the name of a classmate was written together with a gift suggestion. During the following weeks you had time to write a poem and you make the surprise. The poem and the surprise could have something to do with the gift or the person for whom the gift was intended to be. It was always a surprise to see what everyone had made for each other and what kind of poems they had written.

Sinterklaas bij ons thuis

Bij ons thuis worden de cadeautjes meestal gecombineerd met gedichtjes zonder surprises. Op de lagere en middelbare school heb ik wel surprises gemaakt, maar daarna alleen nog maar toen onze dochters de lagere en middelbare school bezochten om ze daarmee te helpen. Een paar weken voor Sinterklaas werden er in de klas lootjes getrokken. Op zo’n lootje stond dan de naam van een klasgenoot met daarop een cadeau suggestie. De daarop volgende weken schreef je dan een gedicht en maakte je de surprise. Het gedicht en de surprise kon iets te maken hebben met het cadeau of met de persoon waar het cadeau voor bedoel was. Het was altijd spannend om te zien wat iedereen voor elkaar gemaakt en geschreven had.

Sinterklaas gifts part 2

To bring back a little bit of the handmade surprises I decided to make this year for some of my friends and family handcrafted gifts from leftover fabrics and yarn. In this Sinterklaas gifts part I post you can see the first two. Today I’ve finished another two. A pouch that looks a bit like a small folded paper lunchbag and an apron. The pouch pattern and sewing instructions was found on the internet. The lunchbag pouch is for someone who always buys a lunch when she’s working at her office.

Met het idee van de surprises in mijn achterhoofd besloot ik om voor een aantal vrienden en familie wat zelfgemaakte cadeautjes te maken van restjes stof en garen. In het Sinterklaas presentjes deel 1 bericht heb ik er al twee laten zien. Vandaag zijn er weer twee af. Een klein buideltje dat wat weg heeft van een papieren lunchbag en een schort. Het lunchbagbuideltje is voor iemand die altijd een lunch koopt op het werk. Ik vond het patroon van het lunchbuideltje op internet.

The apron with a rabbit and carrots

With the apron I’ve got a little bit carried away. The apron is a feminine styled butcher apron. It has bust darts to give it a better fit. It’s my own pattern and is more then thirty years old. Over the years I’ve made many aprons from this pattern not only for myself but also for family and friends.

Het maken van het schort is een beetje uit de hand gelopen. Het schort is een vrouwelijke versie van een slagersshort. Het heeft figuurnaden voor een betere pasvorm. Het is mijn eigen ontwerp en meer dan dertig jaar oud. Zo door de jaren heen heb ik aardig wat van schorten van dit patroon gemaakt voor familieleden en vrienden.

Sewing the apron with a rabbit and carrots

This time the apron is for somebody who likes rabbits. When I began making  the apron I had a vage idea of a rabbit coming out of the pocket and some carrots. During the sewing process the whole theme came alive and ended with a rabbit looking from the pocket where the falling carrots are going. The rabbit and carrots are giving some strength be using fusible interfacing and then attached on the apron by using a small zigzag stitch. Although it was a lot of work it was worth doing it. I’m really pleased with the result and never thought it was going to look like this when I started. The making of this apron reminded me of the time spend on making a really special surprise for one of your schoolmates.

Het konijnenschort met wortels stikken

Dit schort is voor iemand die konijnen leuk vindt. Toen ik aan dit schort begon had ik een vaag idee hoe het eruit zou gaan zien. Uiteindelijk werd het een konijn die vanuit de zak naar vallende wortels kijken om te zien waar ze heen gaan. Konijn en wortels zijn verstevigd met plakvlieseline en dan met een smalle zigzagsteek om het schort vastgezet. Er is aardig wat tijd in gaan zitten, maar ik ben zeer tevreden met het resultaat. Het maken van dit schort doet mij denken aan de tijd dat je een bijzonder surprise maakte voor een klasgenoot.
