As seasons turns from winter into spring and summer and summer into autumn and winter, there is always a moment to take a look at your wardrobe and to be critical about what is hanging in your closet and especially the portability of a garment. I am not going to explain how to do this, there is plenty written about. Nor am I going to tell you how I do it. Except a wardrobe, I also have (of course) a stock of fabrics, sometimes with a sewing pattern of the garment to make. When I buy fabric and patterns I don’t have the intention to turn them into stash, but sometimes something happens and the fabric and pattern end on the shelf of my closet. The question now is, is this going to happen. Do I still find the pattern and fabric suitable and wearable or was it something I bought in impulse. One of these fabric-pattern packages has become this jacket. So in this case the original plan was carried out.
The pattern: Knipmode Januari 2014
The pattern is from Knipmode January 2014 and the fabric was also bought in the same month. The funny thing is that in the meantime I’ve already sewn 2 jackets (number one and number two) for myself, but for some inexplicable reason never this jacket. The jacket is a classic model with a princess seam in the front and center- and back seam and two darts in the back. Instead of a lapel the jacket has a neckband with two cutouts in it. I cut size 38 and made two small changes: SBA and fitting the shoulder to my size. Although I had fitted the jacket twice during the sewing process I decided after finishing the whole jacket to make the jacket a little bit slimmer: I took 1cm off the side seams, the center back seams and the back darts. The result is now to my satisfaction and more fitted. The T-shirt under the jacket is the famous one piece twisted top from the first Pattern Magic book by Tomoko Nakamichi.
Het T-shirt is the twisted top uit Pattern Magic I.
The fabric and lining
The fabric I used is a coarsely woven off-white and blue fabric. For the neckline and two pockets, I chose a dark blue fabric. The lining is with a design. The inside of the jacket has a pocket which can be closed with a zipper. Inside pockets are very practical for a small wallet, banking and OVkaart and mobile phone. The center back of the lining has a pleat for more comfort. The pleat is topstitched with a decorative stitch. The sleeve is sewing in with a sleeve head and the shoulder pads are custom made. Instead of the button I used a plastic snap. When I sewed the buttonhole there was no balance between the buttonhole and the front contrast band.

The Finished Jacket
Conclusion: The jacket was fairly easy to make. Well have I made some adjustments: SBA, making hips smaller and making jacket and shoulders longer. It has become a very wearable jacket that fits well with jeans and a nice white or dark blue T-shirt or a nice blouse. Although I was using fabric from my stash I still have enough blue fabric to sew another jacket and off white-blue fabric for a skirt or something else. If you asked me: would you make this jacket again, then the answer is probably not. Although I like the jacket I don’t see me hacking this pattern.
