Great British Sewing Bee

Great British Sewing Bee is back at BBC2. Claudia Winkelman is still the host and Patrick Grant one of the judges and May Martin is replaced by Esme Young. Each serie has a book and this year the title is ‘From Stitch to Style’. From the book belonging to third serie I made the Drapey Knit Dress. I’ve watched the trailer and I’m looking forward to see this serie too. Yesterday started the first episode with ten contestants and three of them are male. Sadly at the end of this first round after showing their skills on basic garment construction one of the guys had to go.

Great British Sewing Bee – the competition

Great British Sewing Bee is a BBC Two television programme that runs for a couple of weeks on Monday evening. Amateur sewers compete to be named ‘Britain’s Best Home Sewer’. The first winner in 2013 was 81-year-old Ann Rowley. The second winner in 2014 was Heather Jacks. She had always a very nice pincushion standing beside her what I tried to copy. On the internet I found the Scottie the doorstopper sewing pattern. Scottie dog didn’t had soles and I decided to add them so the dog could stand better on his feet. Later I did the same again when I made Chris Moose. Sadly the fabric I used for the dog isn’t suitable for a pincushion and the dog was standing on a cabinet. After finishing the KNIPster 2016 sewing competition I had the the bracelet made for theme 4 in my hand and didn’t know what to with it. When I sew pincushion Scotty I decided to see if it would fit around his neck to turn into a dog collar. It fitted beautifully and now it’s still standing on the cabinet. Last year was won by a man: Matt Chapple.

Great British Sewing Bee – the name

Great British Sewing Bee is all about coming together, sewing together and finding out who’s the best amateur sewer during the competition. In some other countries, like Denmark, France, Germany, Norway and also the Netherlands there have been spinoff’s. In the Netherlands it was called ‘Door Het Oog Van De Naald’ (DHOVDN – which can be described as ‘escaping through a narrow gateway’). This show stopped after one year and KNIPmode that was one of the sponsors of this show decided to replace it by an online sewing competition the KNIPster sewing award in which I became one of the participants.

Great British Sewing Bee – versus KNIPster

Great British Sewing Bee (GBSB) is completely different then KNIPster. DHOVDN had a format like GBSB, but the contestants in DHOVDN were a mix of amateur sewers and professionals. What the difference is between an amateur and a professional is a interesting question. For me an amateur is a home sewer who makes clothes after a day job and does perhaps understand  some sewing techniques, but unlike the processional sewer she or he hasn’t have or barely has any knowledge how to construct a garment with professional sewing techniques. After the catwalk I was talking to some visitors and some of them were professionals. They told me some difference what they would have done when they had to sew one of my items, but as they said at the end of the conversation they told me I had done a beautiful job for an amateur. Will I ever sew like a pro? Never: my sewing and finishing will always show I am an amateur, a home sewer. Although I will always try to give everything I sew a beautiful finish with the sewing techniques I know and the ones I’m learning during my search on the internet. I’m a disappoint not winning the KNIPster 2016 sewing award? Of course, but the winner was better then me: A professional skilled woman, who understood more about how to sew a garment together.

Great British Sewing Bee – serie 4

Great British Sewing Bee is terug op BBC2 met Claudia Winkelman als presentator en Patrick Grant als een van de juryleden. May Martin is vervangen door Esme Young. Elke serie komt met een boek en dit jaar is de titel ‘From Stitch to Style’. Uit het boek dat bij de serie hoorde heb ik the Drapey Knit Dress gemaakt. Een paar dagen gelden heb ik naar de trailer gekeken en ook naar deze serie kijk ik weer uit. Gisteren was de eerste uitzending met tien deelnemers waarvan er drie man zijn. Helaas aan het einde van deze uitzending waarbij iedereen getest werd op hun kennis van de basisnaaitechnieken moest een van de heren naar huis.

Great British Sewing Bee – de wedstrijd

Great British Sewing Bee is elke maandagavond om 22.00h op BBC2 te zien waarbij amateur kledingmakers en -naaisters strijden om de titel ‘Britain’s Best Home Sewer. In 2013 werd de 81-jarige Ann Rowley de eerste winnares gevolgd door Heather Jacks in 2014. Zij had altijd een leuk speldenkussen bij haar in de vorm van een hond dat ik probeerde te kopiëren. Op het internet vond ik het Scottie the doorstopper naaipatroon. Scottie dog had geen zolen en ik besloot deze toe te voegen zodat hij beter kon staan. Hetzelfde deed ik later nog een keer met Chris Moose. Helaas is de stof die ik gebruikt niet erg gestikt om er gemakkelijk spelden in te steken en belandde de hond op een kastje. Na het beëindigen van de KNIPster 2016 wedstrijd had ik de armband die ik maakte bij thema 4 en wist niet zo gauw wat ik mee wilde doen tot mijn oog viel op speldenkussen Scotty en ik besloot om te kijken of het om zijn nek zou passen en nu heeft Scotty een halsband. Vorig jaar was de winnaar een man: Matt Chapple.

Great British Sewing Bee – de naam

Great British Sewing Bee draait om het bij elkaar komen om te naaien in wedstrijd vorm om uit te maken wie het beste als amateur kleding kan maken. In diverse landen zijn er soort gelijke wedstrijden zoals Denemarken, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Noorwegen en Nederland. In Nederland heette ‘Door Het Oog Van De Naald’ (DHOVDN). Na een jaar stopte de show en KNIPmode besloot er een vervolg aan te geven met de online KNIPster wedstrijd waar ik ook aan deelnam.

Great British Sewing Bee (GBSB) is totaal verschillend dan KNIPster. DHOVDN had een format zoals GBSB, maar de deelnemers bestonden uit zowel amateurs als professionals. Wat het verschil is tussen een amateur en een professional is een interessante vraag. Zoals ik het zie is een amateur iemand die thuis voor de lol achter de naaimachine zit met misschien wat kennis van naaitechnieken, maar die in tegenstelling tot de processional verder geen enkele kennis heeft om een kledingstuk professioneel in elkaar te zetten. Na de catwalk stond ik met diverse bezoekers te praten waarvan sommige professionals waren. Zij vertelden mij hoe zij diverse kledingstukken die ik gemaakt had als professional in elkaar zouden hebben gezet, waarbij zij mij aan het eind lieten weten dat ik als amateur prima werk had geleverd. Blijft de vraag: zal ik ooit naaien als een pro? Nooit: aan mijn eigengemaakte kleding zul je altijd zien dat ik een amateur ben. Al zal ik altijd blijven proberen keurig te werken met leuke details met behulp van de kennis die ik nu heb en die ik nog zal leren dankzij internet. Ben ik teleurgesteld dat ik niet gewonnen heb? Natuurlijk, maar de winnaar was beter dan ik: een professional, die meer verstand heeft van hoe je een kledingstuk in elkaar zet.
