Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top – the start

I wanted to use this ethnic print for the Japanese Top that can be found in the GBSB book ‘Form Stitch to Style’. The fabric was pre-washed but unfortunately it had a shrinking percentage that was more than I had counted on. Therefore the amount of fabric wasn’t enough to make the Japanese Top. I had to find an alternative for the fabric. This isn’t the first time I have to deal with shrinking that’s more than the average. How did I came from this The Japanese Top to the Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top.

Shrinking percentage

I decided to write down the measurements before pre-washing and afterwards. The name of the fabric supplier or producer is also added when I can find it. I want to learn more about shrinking percentage and in the long run hope it will be of any use to me when I buy new fabric.

The alternative Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top

I do like garments with and asymmetrical look. The Japanese Top that I had planned has that look. The Drape Drape Top was my first alternative. I wanted to show as much as would be possible of the pattern on the fabric. When I was pinning the pattern on the fabric I discovered a hole. There was no way to cut this Top also. I decided to make a cut-on sleeve using the pattern I had made for the color blocked top. The front pattern is the same as the back piece because I wanted to work out a neckline idea. I also wanted a different hem line then my usual high-low.

Making the Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top

The top was done in 2 hours and almost finished. I came up with the idea of making inserts at the hem. Because the triangel shaped inserts weren’t planned by the start to get them fitted properly into the top was taking me more than one hour. The neckline shape was tried before finishing and I was happy with the outcome. The triangel shaped inserts are made of black jersey fabric. The neckline is also finished with the same black jersey was. I decided to do the finishing on the backside of the fabric. The hem is finished with the already same low curved finish.

What to do with the leftovers?

Due to the alternative choice a large amount of fabric was left. While I was making the Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top I was already thinking what to make from the leftover fabric. I’m always trying to find good use for the leftover fabric while sewing the primair object. The piece of leftover fabric is therefore my next sewing project. This last finished Top? I’m pleased with the outcome of this Top and it will be a great additions to my Top collection. This top will look great on my black trousers, the red jeans and finally my white Levi’s. I’m also pleased with the hemline.

Van A naar een Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top

Ik kocht deze stof met etnische print om er een Japanese Top van te maken. De Japanese Top die ik deze keer wilde staat in het GBSB boek ‘Form Stitch to Style’. Na het voorwassen bleek de stof meer gekrompen dan waar ik op gerekend had. Hierdoor kwam ik stof te kort om de Japanese Top te maken en ging op zoek naar een alternatief. Helaas is dit niet de eerste keer dat stoffen zo krimpen tijdens het voorwassen.

Krimppercentage van stoffen

Ik besloot de maten op te schrijven van voor en na het wassen. Eventueel met de naam van de stoffenfabriek erbij als dit bekend is. Zo hoop ik dan wat meer te weten te komen over krimp tijdend het voorwassen en dat ik er uiteindelijk mijn voordeel mee kan doen.

De Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top als alternatief

Asymmetrische kledigstukken vind ik erg leuk. De Japanese Top heeft dat. De Drape Drape Top werd mijn alternatief. Ik wilde zo veel mogelijk van de print op de stof laten zien. Tijdens het opspelden van dit patroon liep ik op een gat in de stof, die ik niet kon vermijden. En zo besloot ik het patroon van de cut-on sleeve  van the color blocked top te gebruiken. Het achterpand werd ook gebruikt voor het voorpand omdat ik iets wilde proberen met de halslijn.
Het naaiwerk was in 2 uur gedaan. Tot ik besloot inzetstukjes bij de zoom te maken. De driehoekige inzetstukjes moesten nu zorgvuldig geplaatst worden. Uiteindelijk was ik ruim een uur verder tevreden met het resultaat. Top aan en de geknipte halslijn was precies goed. De halslijn is aan de binnenkant afgewerkt met dezelfde zwarte jersey stof als de inzetstukjes. De zoom heeft niet de gebruikelijke high-low maar deze keer zijn de voor- en achterkant afgewerkt zoals bij een herenoverhemd.

Wat te doen met de overgebleven stof?

Door de alternatieve keuze is er nogal wat stof overgebleven. Terwijl ik de Ethnic print Cut-on sleeve Top bezig was, zat ik al een plan te maken wat ik met de rest zou gaan doen. Ik probeer steeds iets nuttigs te vinden voor wat overblijft terwijl ik met de stof bezig ben. Mijn volgende naaiproject i dan ook met deze stof. Ondanks de teleurstelling ben ik tevreden met deze Top en past prima bij diverse kledingstukken uit mijn kledingkast.
